A 2025 report from the Council to Advance Hunting and the Shooting Sports (CAHSS) confirms what many in the outdoor world already suspect. Most Americans support hunting and shooting sports.

The survey shows that support, however, depends on how, why, and what is being hunted or shot.

These numbers show strong overall support, but also clear boundaries. Americans want purpose, ethics, and tradition behind every shot. Without those, approval quickly fades.

Hunting for Food and Wildlife Management Wins Public Favor

Americans are far more comfortable with hunting when it serves a clear, tangible purpose. Hunting for food was ranked as the most acceptable reason. Conservation and wildlife population control followed close behind. Hunting for the protection of people or property also rated well.

On the shooting side, people are most supportive when activities relate to training for self-defense, hunting preparation, or formal competition. Recreational shooting done simply for personal challenge or fun saw lower levels of approval.

In short, Americans expect practical value. The public is more likely to support pulling the trigger when the end result is food, safety, or ecological benefit.

Predator, Trophy Hunts, and Tech Raise Red Flags

While general support remains high, certain forms of hunting bring a sharp drop in approval. Most Americans do not support trophy hunting, particularly when it involves predators or exotic animals. Hunting mountain lions, wolves, and African species saw the highest levels of disapproval.

How you hunt matters just as much. Traditional firearms and archery gear are widely accepted. But hunting methods involving baiting, high fences, or advanced technologies like thermal scopes received mixed or negative responses.

Fair chase principles still hold weight with the public. Anything that looks like an unfair advantage or violates ethical standards risks losing support.

Public Trust in Safety Is Strong, But Not Unshakable

Sixty-nine percent of Americans believe hunters and sport shooters act responsibly with firearms. That number is solid, but not universal. Nearly one in three people still express doubt. In a cultural and political climate where firearms often make headlines, that uncertainty matters.

The majority of Americans say their views on hunting and shooting have not changed recently. But for those who have shifted, the movement splits evenly.

About 18% say their view has become more favorable, while another 18% say it has turned more negative.

Media coverage, especially surrounding gun violence or controversial hunts, continues to shape public sentiment.

Geography and Demographics Shape Opinion

Support for hunting and shooting is not spread evenly across the map. Rural residents, especially those in the Midwest and Mountain West, show the highest levels of support. Men are more supportive than women. White respondents tend to view hunting more favorably than Black or Hispanic respondents.

In urban and suburban areas, skepticism is more common. Hunters, agencies, and brands looking to connect with urban audiences should expect to face more resistance. Messaging in these areas will need to be more deliberate, focused, and values-based.

Most Americans Still Claim a Conservation Ethic

Despite the divisions, 62% of Americans say they identify as conservationists. That shared identity offers a foundation. It presents an opportunity for hunters and shooters to connect with broader audiences by highlighting the role they play in funding and supporting conservation work.

The Bottom Line

Support for hunting and shooting in the U.S. is real, but it is not unconditional. Americans value these activities when they are grounded in tradition, responsibility, and purpose. Hunters, shooters, and the gear industry need to continue earning that support. This means highlighting conservation impact, embracing fair chase ethics, and avoiding the trappings of tech-heavy or exploitative practices.

The future of hunting and shooting sports will depend on how well the community defends its role in conservation and connects with the values the public already holds.

Many people can’t afford to spend $500-2,000 on a set of hunting binoculars. It’s just not that realistic because hunting can be expensive. At minimum, you need a weapon of some sort, warm clothes, boots, gas to get to your hunting grounds, tags, and licenses … the list goes on and on. After all of that, it can be tough to justify expensive optics.

That’s why I think “budget” binoculars are just as important to review as high-end ones. There are numerous options available in the $150-250 price range, and for many hunters, that’s as much as they can afford. This year, I received a new budget set from Cabela’s, the Cabela’s Intensity ED Binoculars.

To give them a fair, meaningful assessment, I decided to stack them up against the other budget binoculars I own, the Vortex Crossfire HD and the Vortex Diamondback. I’ve relied on both of them for years, both for personal use and as loaners to friends and family. Vortex is a staple in the hunting community, and I assessed different features to see which was the better budget binocular: Vortex or Cabela’s.

Note: I tested the standard Vortex Diamondback, which was replaced by the Diamondback HD. The price of the binoculars didn’t change much, so I’m unsure of the difference in performance.

In short: It’s not a cut-and-dry answer. I found the Cabela’s Intensity ($199) to be noticeably clearer than the Crossfires ($149), but they do require a larger investment. To my surprise, the Intensities performed toe-to-toe with the more expensive Diamondbacks ($249). However, just because they’re 50 bucks less doesn’t mean they’re the perfect choice. Which one you should purchase comes down to more than just price.

For a quick overview on the difference in specs between the Intensity EDs and the offerings from Vortex, check out the above chart. I left out magnification and objective lens size because each set I used are 10x42s. It should also be noted that the prices I listed for the Vortex binoculars are not the listed MSRP, but rather the price at which they are regularly available (lower than MSRP).

Weight

Based on the spec sheet, you’ll see that the Cabela’s Intensity EDs are the heaviest binoculars of the budget binocular bunch. I do not notice that difference when carrying them in the harness. In all honesty, all three pairs feel the same when being carried in their harness.

I do, however, notice the weight difference when I’m holding them to my face. I actually prefer the heavier feel of the Crossfires and Intensities. For me, it feels more stable, and I can get a steadier image with them. It comes down to personal preference. But if you’re a weight-cutting type of person, the Vortex Diamondback is the clear winner.

Close-Focus Distance

All three of them have a different close-focus distance, which is the closest distance the binoculars can focus on a subject. The Intensity HDs have the worst performance in that category at 8.2 feet. From a hunting standpoint, though, I don’t really care. I’m looking for far-off creatures. I don’t need to get a macro view of the annoying squirrel that keeps buzzing my treestand.

The winner: Vortex Diamondback

Budget Binoculars: Optical Clarity

Optical clarity is arguably the most important feature when purchasing binoculars. Often it’s lacking with budget binoculars, and there can be very tangible differences between them. You know when you’re trying to decide if that thing in the distance is a stump or a bedded mule deer? Improved optical clarity will solve that and potentially keep you from an unnecessary half-mile jaunt.

With hunting seasons being closed, I’ve been spending my evenings on the back patio searching for squirrels and other critters in the woods behind my house. It’s a laid-back way to look at the same things with different binoculars back to back to test clarity.

Cabela’s Intensity ED vs. Crossfire HD

Within a few minutes of looking, it was clear that the Cabela’s Intensity EDs are more optically clear than the Vortex Crossfire HDs. The edges of the image are especially more distorted with the cheaper of the Vortexes. To ensure that I wasn’t just imagining it, I had my wife compare them as well, without telling her my thoughts. She quickly came to the same conclusion I did.

Cabela’s Intensity ED vs. Diamondback

I can’t say which of these two binoculars is clearer. It’s been driving me nuts. I go back and forth, flip-flopping between them. I’ve hung up the binoculars for the day and revisited at a later date, time and time again.

After observing the tiny details of close objects and counting pinecones on distant trees, they seem about the exact same to me. I tried to focus on the clarity of the image’s edges and couldn’t tell much of a difference.

Like comparing the last two sets, I gave it the “wife test” to see what she thought. She also couldn’t decide, so from a real-world perspective, you’ll be hard pressed to find a difference in clarity.

Budget Binoculars in Low-Light Conditions

With the Cabela’s Intensity ED being so much optically clearer than the Crossfires, I didn’t waste valuable evening light comparing the two for low-light performance. Honestly, if you have the extra 50 bucks, I think it’s worth the upgrade to go to the Intensities. So, I stuck to comparing the Diamondbacks and Intensities in the last minutes of light.

Like the clarity testing, the two are so close it’s ridiculous. After multiple nights of comparing the two, I came to the conclusion that the Intensity EDs have slightly better low-light performance. I could make out more details on tree trunks in the dark timber with waning light while looking through them. However, the difference is barely noticeable.

My wife concluded that the Cabela’s Intensity EDs are better in low light more quickly than I did. She said she noticed a difference within a few minutes. Again, I would like to stress that we tested them independently, so she had no idea what my thoughts were.

Fog Resistance

Both Vortex and Cabela’s claim to be “nitrogen-purged for fogproof performance.” Yeah, OK. Fogproof. I doubted it.

That usually means that binoculars won’t internally fog, which is true of all of these binoculars. However, every pair of binoculars I’ve used will fog externally while going through drastic temperature changes. Picture hopping out of your nice, toasty truck cab to glass on a blistery November day. Your lenses will fog up.

To test fog resistance, I kept them all on my desk in the cool A/C for a few hours and then hopped out the door into a humid 98-degree Tennessee day.

All of the binoculars fogged up, but the Intensities fogged up quicker and more intensely than the Vortex Diamondbacks and Crossfires. Rather than getting a quick look at a whitetail in the neighbor’s yard, I was immediately met with a blurry image. With the Diamondbacks and Crossfires, I was able to sneak in a 5-second glance before fog took over.

Again, I’m referring to a slight difference. Once the fog hit, each set was unusable for about 5 minutes until they adjusted to the warmer, more humid environment. So, it may not really matter from a hunting standpoint.

Included Binocular Harnesses

All three of these binoculars come with a pretty basic harness, and both sets of Vortex binos come with the same harness. I always switch over to an aftermarket binocular harness that can store a rangefinder. If that’s you, and you plan on junking the included harness, you can skip this part of the showdown. If you plan on using it, read on, because there are differences.

Both harnesses feature a zippered pouch on the back and come with components to hang the binoculars with clips to the external straps of the harness. Below are the differences.

Harness for the Cabela’s Intensity ED Binoculars

The Cabela’s Intensity HD Harness gets bonus points for being quiet. The internal portion is made of neoprene, and it’s dead silent when I pull the binoculars out of it. The external material is also quiet when you rub your hands across it. That may not be important for some, but for bowhunters pursuing skittish whitetail in thick cover, it’s vital.

I also like the mesh pockets on the side of the harness. The elastic portion is stretchy, and there’s enough room to store a few diaphragm calls in each one.

Unfortunately, the harness gets some points knocked off because its latch system is a touch off. The metal hook keeper is too close to the lid, so the elastic band on the top sits loosely around it. The only way to completely secure the top of the harness is to jam the leather tab on the elastic band into the hook.

Harness for the Vortex Binoculars

If you want the short of it, the Vortex harness’s strengths and weaknesses are the exact opposite of the harness included with the Intensity HD binoculars.

The internal and external materials are loud when getting in and out of it. It also has mesh pockets on the side, but they’re really tight, to the point of being unusable.

But, on the plus side, the latch system is tight, and the elastic band stretches down for a snug fit on the metal hook keeper.

Components and Construction

Every adjustment knob on the Intensities features aggressive texturing, including the diopter adjustment. It’s extremely grippy, and I prefer it over the slicker feeling adjustments on the Vortex binoculars.

Overall, the focus wheel, diopter adjustment, and the cover for a tripod mount all feel heavier duty and sturdier on the Cabela’s binoculars. That’s probably part of the reason they’re heavier. I also like how the tripod mount cover is larger. It’s much easier to take on and off than the thin one found on the Vortex binoculars.

That’s not to say the Vortex components aren’t good. They’ve held up well for me over the years. I just like the aggressive texturing and sturdier feel the Cabela’s Intensities provide.

Warranty of Budget Binoculars

Vortex has one of the best warranties in the biz. There’s no two ways around it. Basically, Vortex doesn’t care how you broke your binos or where you bought them. They promise to take care of you free of charge, whether that means a repair or outright replacement.

The Cabela’s warranty is laden with your basic “defects in materials and workmanship” language. There is no language about accidental breakage. To me, that means no warranty.

I know people who have used Vortex’s warranty and had great experiences with it. So, the Cabela’s Intensity EDs easily lose out in the warranty department.

So, Which Budget Binoculars Are Best?

That’s a personal question that comes down to what matters most to you. If budget is the most important, the Crossfire HD binoculars are the clear choice. They may not be the best, but they’re reasonably priced, and I can attest that they provide passable service for many hunters. And, with that warranty, you’ll have them forever.

If you can spare a few more bucks, though, I think the other two options provide better value. From a hunting standpoint, optical clarity and low-light performance are the most critical aspects of a budget binocular.

You may have noticed that I scored both the Cabela’s Intensity EDs and the Vortex Diamondbacks the same. They’re scored the same, but for different reasons. That’s why I have such a tough time recommending one over the other. The Cabela’s binoculars get the nod in low-light performance, components, and price.

But that Vortex warranty is a big deal. It should be noted that I personally have not broken a set of binoculars in 13 years. But if I did, the Vortex backing would be nice. If warranty really matters to you, and you have the extra 50 bucks, go for the Diamondbacks.

When I was coming up as a new bowhunter, the standard release everyone was given was an index-style release aid. It was the easiest transition from gun hunting to bowhunting. Fast forward to the present day, and I’d argue that the standard is slowly moving toward handheld releases.

Evolution Outdoors Shadow Thumb Button Review

Overview

Evolution Outdoors is no stranger to the archery release game. The Evolution Outdoors Ibex hinge release has been a huge hit among bowhunters. This hinge can lock on your D-loop and be left at the ready, much like a thumb release. With that, it also has an inaudible click. I personally love the Ibex.

With that said, not everyone wants to hunt with a hinge release, and some may be downright gun-shy of doing such things. So, owner Dale Perry decided to come out with the Shadow thumb button release.

The Shadow was made with the intention of having the same exact profile as the Ibex, but in a thumb-release version. Dale wanted to not only provide a top-notch release for the folks who weren’t ready to hop over to a hinge, but also one that could be used seamlessly alongside the Ibex hinge. Two completely separate release styles with the same one impact point downrange.

Sizes and Colors

When picking out an Evolution Outdoors Shadow Thumb Button, you’ll have the color choices of either Arizona Archery Green Cerakote or Sniper Grey Cerakote. At the moment, the Shadow is only offered in size Medium, but I’m sure Evolution will come out with a Large in the future.

Like most thumb releases, the Shadow can be effortlessly attached and locked to the D-loop, left hanging at the ready. These releases have an ergonomic design providing comfort for long shooting sessions. With that, you’ll have the option to adjust trigger travel and ring finger angle to really tailor the feel of the release to you and your style. Each Shadow weighs 2.3 ounces and comes in its own EVA carrying case.

Another thing I need to mention is that Evolution offers the option to purchase an inline thumb barrel, which would position the thumb barrel directly inline with the body of the release. This is a unique feature that we’ll talk about more below.

Shadow Features

Same Impact Point as Ibex Hinge

First and foremost, the Shadow was made quite literally in the Shadow of the Ibex hinge. The Ibex has experienced an immense amount of success, but hunting with a hinge isn’t for everyone. Some folks train with one, but hunt with a thumb button. The problem in the past switching between releases, though, is that hunters experience different impact points downrange.

Even anchor points can change a bit between releases. With the relationship between the Ibex and the Shadow, you don’t have to worry about such things at all. They are the same, but different to appease you, the bowhunter.

Hang at the Ready

Whether you’re in the treestand or crawling into range and waiting for a buck to stand up, having the ability to hang your release from the D-loop at the ready is a huge advantage. Time is money in the field, and this feature is going to save you time when the moment of truth presents itself.

The Shadow attaches seamlessly to your D-loop simply by rocking the clasp into the head. That’s it. Locked and loaded, no fumbling at the last second.

Inline Thumb Barrel

This feature is one that caught my attention immediately, as it’s never been done before. Thumb releases have all traditionally been made with the thumb barrel offset from the body of the release. This puts the button on the opposite side of the release body that your face is on while at full draw. It puts it out of line. In archery, we always preach about keeping everything in line and straight. This is where Evolution Outdoors decided to make a change.

By simply detaching the original thumb barrel and reattaching the inline thumb barrel, your button will now be directly in line with the body of the release. This provides an incredibly natural feel that I think archers will gravitate toward over time.

My Experience

I’ve been a huge fan of the Ibex hinge release since it came out. It’s my main release and the one I hunt with. So, when I got word that Evolution was coming out with a mirror-imaged thumb button release, I had to try one out.

It literally feels exactly like the Ibex, but there is a button on it. I shot these two releases side by side at 50 yards and was amazed at the consistency between the two. My arrows were all grouped right together.

Being someone who plays around with releases on a regular basis, I have seen the difference in impact points between even the same styles of releases. Two thumb buttons may hit differently downrange. For a thumb and a hinge to hit the same place, that is nothing short of awesome.

Clean Break

Along with the seamless shooting between Shadow and Ibex, I was really impressed by how crisp the Shadow trigger was. This is a pet peeve of mine. I cannot stand a trigger that feels sloppy. It leads to inconsistent breaks in the shot, which leads to bad groups.

Plus, it just feels bad, too. In my opinion, a release should break easily without me feeling it much at all. This Shadow is super crisp, and I never feel like it’s fighting against me on the shot.

Standard vs. Inline Configuration

Lastly, I have to touch on the inline thumb barrel. After playing with both configurations, the standard and inline, I have to admit the inline feels so much better. It took some getting used to, of course, because it was different.

However, after using the inline and then going back to the standard, my exact words were, “Oh, wow. I don’t like that.” You need to try out the inline if you get the chance. It feels so much more natural.

What’s Wrong

My only gripe with the Shadow at the moment is the fact that it’s only offered in one size. Unlike the Ibex, offered in sizes Medium and Large, the Shadow is only offered in Medium. So, if someone uses a Large Ibex, the Medium Shadow might not fit exactly the same.

With how new the Shadow is, I have confidence that Evolution will eventually make a Large version available, but time will tell.

Final Thoughts

While the Shadow was made in the shadow of the Ibex, it holds its own in the thumb release world, and I’d put it up against any thumb button out there. It has been wildly accurate for me, and I love that it has the same impact point as my Ibex hinge from Evolution. On top of that, the ability to switch to an inline button is next-level and sets it apart from anything else out there.

This is a winner from top to bottom if you ask me, and I guarantee you’re going to see more from the Shadow in the future because there is truly nothing else like it.

If you know what you’re buying. If you don’t read the fine print, you might assume you’re covered when you’re not.

But here’s the catch. You have to register within 60 days. Miss that window, and you’re back to standard defect-only coverage. It’s a premium policy, but one that requires a little responsibility on your end.

It’s a dependable warranty. Just not one that covers the kind of wear and tear most of us are familiar with.

The Breakdown: Nikon’s warranty is the definition of basic. It’ll cover you for factory defects, but that’s where the support ends. Drop it, ding it, or hand it off to someone else, and the warranty won’t do a thing.

It works if you treat your optics like glass and never put them to the test. But if you actually use your gear, you’re better off with a brand that offers real-world coverage.

Who Has the Best Warranty?

If you’re looking for the most worry-free coverage, three brands stand out: Vortex, Maven, and Leupold.

Their warranties are almost identical in structure and strength. All three offer lifetime, fully transferable coverage that includes accidental damage, and none of them require receipts or registration. If your binos get busted, they’ll fix or replace them. Simple as that.

Vortex has long been the standard, thanks to its visibility and customer-first approach, but Maven and Leupold match that policy with equal confidence. Between the three, you’re in very good hands.

Zeiss is also worth a mention, especially if you’re buying top-tier models, and remember to register in time. Its accidental coverage is limited to one incident over 5 years, but that’s better than most.

SIG Sauer, Swarovski, and Nikon offer decent baseline coverage for defects but leave you unprotected when it comes to accidents. Bushnell is somewhere in the middle. It can be fantastic if you buy into the Ironclad line, but lackluster for entry-level optics.

Final Thoughts

If you’re going to spend real money on anything in your hunting kit, let it be your glass. Optics are one of the most important tools in the field. They help you find animals faster, stay locked in longer, and cover more country without wasting time squinting across the next ridge.

Buy what you can afford, and make sure the warranty matches how you hunt. If you’re rough on gear like I am, you need a warranty that’s built to handle it. If you’re gentle and protective of your kit, you might get away with a less comprehensive policy.

Good glass makes a difference. Serious hunters know that. But don’t let the budget stop you from getting out there. Our grandparents filled tags and freezers with nothing more than hand-me-down boots and sharpened instincts.

For hunters who find themselves stationary hunting in the cold or tromping through creeks and flooded fields, rubber hunting boots are a must. Sure, you can get by with your standard hunting boots, but you’ll quickly find yourself with frozen digits. I’ve hunted whitetails in December in mountain hunting boots, which were far from ideal. With minimal insulation, it became very difficult to focus on anything besides my toes screaming in agony.

Unfortunately, rubber boots are really hard to get right. They need to be completely waterproof for stream crossings while not being so hot that you sweat, leading to cold feet.

Even more challenging is finding a set that fits well. A good fit means no awkward pinch points and fitting just tight enough to keep your foot secure, but not so tight that it causes sore spots. Many rubber boots are non-breathable, so a swampy, ill-fitting boot is the prime environment for blisters.

Fortunately, I, along with a crew of GearJunkie testers, took to the woods to test the latest offerings to ensure you don’t end up with sweaty, cold, blister-covered feet. After an entire hunting season in Montana, Jennifer Schmidt found the KUIU HD Mud Boot ($229) to provide support that is tough to find in rubber boots. Rubber boots aren’t typically associated with Western hunting, but she needed them for a myriad of creek crossings to and from her hunting grounds. It isn’t common to cover large distances in rubber boots, but she did.

These boots offer a slightly tighter fit. That isn’t to say they run small- they run true to size. However, they’re tighter in the ankle, which results in excellent support while crossing rocky streams. The insole also provided great stability for the arch of our tester’s foot. If you need the ultimate stability in a rubber hunting boot, these are for you.

Montana is a harsh place, and these boots stood up to the harsh environment. Throughout testing, they remained completely waterproof and showed no signs of cracking or wear through the entire upper of the boot. After a season, there was some wear on the outsole, but not any more than the average boot would wear over an entire season. They’re built to last and should endure seasons of use.

While Jennifer found the fleece lining in the boot to provide a decent level of warmth, these are not made for the coldest hunts. If you’re hunting frigid conditions, you’ll either need to layer socks underneath these boots, or look for a different option. But for early spring turkey hunts and fall to mid-fall deer hunts, you should be covered.

While hiking long distances, Jennifer found the KUIU HD Mud Boot had an annoying habit of rubbing on her shin, causing mild discomfort. It seems like that extra support in the ankle may cause that rubbing. However, if you aren’t hiking marathon distances (and if you are, I recommend a regular boot), you’ll find great traction and stability.

The Redhead Camo Utility Waterproof Rubber Boots ($69) are an amazing boot in a world where “budget” products are not all that budget-friendly or are complete junk. The Redheads offer a true value for hunters looking to get something serviceable while saving some money for all of the other hunting gear they need to buy.

I wore these boots through the rainy spring in Nashville. The area I live in received so much rain that my front yard sported a new water feature for a few weeks. While that created a giant mess, it did give me the perfect opportunity to test rubber boots, and the Redheads held up great.

I expected a boot in this price range to have seams that would leak. But, I found they were completely waterproof and attribute that to multiple layers of rubber being overlaid in high-wear areas. They fit well and were very comfortable.

These boots, with just 5 mm of insulation, aren’t going to be the warmest option out there. If you need to stay on a budget and are hunting solely in frigid conditions, you’d probably need to upsize in these boots and add additional layers of socks.

I’m in the early testing stages of this boot and can’t say how well it will hold up to years of use, but so far, I’ve had zero failures. And even if they do fail, at around 70 bucks, you can’t complain if they need to be replaced every couple of years. The Redhead Camo Utility Waterproof Rubber Boots are perfect for hunters on a budget or for those who need rubber boots for occasional use.

One of the most innovative rubber boots to hit the market, the SITKA VentLite GTX Boot ($399) provides a complete overhaul of “rubber boots”. Rather than being made from insulating neoprene and rubber, the VentLites are made with PrimaLoft insulation and GORE-TEX laminates. The result is a waterproof boot that breathes and keeps your feet toasty.

GearJunkie tester Sonja Anderson wore these boots in the spring, including while working steers in corrals on a ranch. That’s mucky, slippery business, and she found these boots to provide mountain-goat-like sure-footedness in even the worst conditions.

Furthermore, while working on the ranch, she found the shape of the upper kept the cuff close to her shin, resulting in very little debris entering the top of the boot. After a day of hard work, the aggressive kick tab on the back made for easy removal.

Like rubber boots of old, these tech-packed boots offer warmth and waterproofness. Sonja used these boots down to 18 degrees while out watching Sage Grouse Leks. With a thin sock, her feet didn’t get cold. Even when submerged in water for half an hour, her feet stayed warm and, more importantly, bone dry.

While she didn’t have the opportunity to use them in the most extreme cold temperatures, I’m confident they’ll stay warm in the worst mid-winter freezes. The GORE-TEX laminates do their job.

The SITKA VentLite GTX does run a touch larger than other boots. That’s great for bulky, warm socks when things get really cold. But, it’s not great for hiking long distances on uneven terrain. Sonja found that the boots caused sore toes after slipping in the boot and smashing against the front while going downhill.

On flat terrain, it wasn’t as noticeable. If you’re looking for one of the best boots to walk to and from treestands in cold, snowy weather, these will give you everything you could ask for.

The Chêne Floodline Velo Boot ($180) was a favorite for GearJunkie contributor Adam Moore because it overcomes many of the problems associated with rubber boots, such as being uncomfortable to hike in and difficult to remove. With an air mesh lining, these boots offer supreme breathability to keep sweat at bay.

These boots were tested in the Deep South, where temperatures and humidity are high. Despite being rubber boots, Adam said they feel more like standard shoes. He hiked around, changing trail cameras and chasing spring gobblers, and never experienced blister-covered feet or excessive sweat.

Of all the boots tested, these were the easiest to remove. Usually, removing rubber boots is a struggle, with sweat and a snug fit making it feel like your boots are suction-cupped to your feet. Fortunately, Chêne put a zipper on these boots that runs from the ankle all the way to the top of the upper. You can unzip these boots and step right out.

With the air mesh liner and minimal insulation, the Chêne Floodline Velo Boot isn’t the warmest boot out there and isn’t designed for winter use. However, if you’re a run-and-gun hunter, hike long distances in rubber boots, or only use rubber boots in the spring, you’ll love the comfort Chêne offers.

Rated down to -60 degrees F, Korkers Neo Arctic ($199) will keep your feet insanely warm. Korkers is not well known in the hunting crowd, but they arguably make some of the best wading boots any fisherman has ever worn. The brand has recently expanded into the daily wear market, and after testing the Neo Arctics through a brutal winter, these boots are done right.

When it comes to sitting in a tree stand in the blistering cold, these suckers shine. Our tester is both a hunter and a lineman, so these boots made their way up power poles in -30 degrees and graced the treestand when the whitetail were so cold they barely moved. 

Few activities make feet colder than sitting in a tree stand all day in cold weather. Our tester spent up to 10 hours in a single go on days down to -30 degrees. In a stand for extended sits, even without any movement, cold temps couldn’t break into these boots.

Korkers is known for its replaceable soles. You can customize what tread you need, from ice spikes to felt and everywhere in between. Not only does this make a boot a true multi-purpose wear, but it’s also eco and wallet-friendly. If your tread wears out, replace the outsole, not the whole boot.

The only complaint so far is that, depending on the socks you wear, these tend to try to work your sock down toward your foot. Socksag is a real nightmare, so keep that in mind.

When you need scent control, but not sweaty feet, the non-insulated LaCrosse Alphaburly Pro ($210) is a solid choice. A staple among hunters for years, LaCrosse offers some of the best rubber boots on the market, and these are no exception.

These boots were extensively tested by myself, and several features stood out to me. They provide phenomenal support, similar to that of a leather boot, and are very ergonomic. There’s nothing worse than climbing up questionably placed climbing sticks to get into a stand with clunky rubber boots. These don’t feel clunky and provide sure footing.

Over the years, I found the “burly” outsole on these boots to perform exactly as advertised. Whether on slick rocks in a creek crossing, mud, or a light dusting of early-season snow, the Alphaburly gripped well. On top of that, the outsole outlasted the rest of the boot. After 5 years of hard use, the neoprene upper had fallen apart, and the rubber was delaminating, but the sole remained functional.

With no insulation in the model I tested, they weren’t too hot for September treestand sits. They are rubber boots, so your feet will get sweaty if you have a long hike into the woods, but they aren’t unbearably hot like other insulated boots.

I loved the gusseted upper, which allowed for a range of adjustability to fit for large calves or different levels of layering. However, the strap to cinch down the upper is a bit long and has a tendency to clap against the boot, resulting in excessive noise. Due to the ergonomic feel and ankle support provided, they can be difficult to remove. Aside from those annoyances, these are great boots that I’ve relied on for years in the whitetail woods.

Designed for fishermen, the no-slip sole is a lifesaver in slick conditions, and the triple-dipped shell is light, flexible, and corrosion-resistant. Reviews say pairs have lasted up to 20 years. And I believe them. My XTRATUFs are only 2 years old and look as good as new after much abuse in the field.

As a bonus, this is one of the best winter boots for sloppy weather around town or in the field. These aren’t great boots for long hikes, but if you hunt in wet environments and want to hop out of the truck ready for anything, these are a great choice.

How the GearJunkie Team Tested Rubber Hunting Boots

Our team decided to round up the best rubber hunting boots on the market and see how they stacked up against one another. New names are jumping into this category, with brands like SITKA and KUIU, traditionally clothing companies, entering the mix. That got us excited, as both those brands build some of the best hunting clothing we’ve used. With all of the new offerings, we wanted to stack the newcomers against our tried-and-true favorites.

The Expert Testers

Sometimes, I test every product in a buyer’s guide. Other times, I rely on my own thoughts and those of others. That’s the case with this guide.

Our testing team for this buyer’s guide stretched across the country to ensure we met the needs of every hunter. We had boots on the ground in Tennessee, Montana, Mississippi, and a few other mucky spots across the States.

I’m based in Nashville, TN where I get ample opportunity to wear rubber boots. Believe it or not, Nashville receives more rain annually than Seattle, and the bulk of it comes in the spring. The entire town turns into a mud pit.

I’ve been hunting for over 10 years, from turkey and elk in Utah to skittish whitetail in the hardwoods of Tennessee. Years ago, I had a terrible experience with rubber hunting boots, and I’ve been sure to test and keep only the best on my feet while chasing whitetail and turkey in the South.

Rachelle Schrute has tromped through every kind of snow Montana offers. She has navigated early snow, late snow, spring snow, slushy snow, and the muddy runoff that follows in some form of rubber boots for years. From making it through the wet slop to the riverbank, doubling down on rural chores, or trudging through brush to one of her tree stands, rubber boots have become her boot of choice in the field (outside of mountain hunting).

Her spring chase for mountain lions and bears brings unpredictable conditions. It’s often wet, sloppy, and cold, and can change by the hour. Rachelle has notoriously cold feet, and not in the metaphorical sense. If her boots don’t keep her toes warm, she will make it known. She expects sound insulation and solid performance. If a pair of rubber boots cannot handle the changing seasons in Montana, they will not last long in her kit.

Our Testing Grounds

The boots on this list were used in as diverse a set of conditions as possible, as rubber hunting boots are worn in a variety of environments. People wear them for balmy 75-degree spring turkey hunts when rain has turned the woods and fields into slick mud pits. They also see a lot of use in the fall and winter, when insulation and scent control are crucial while hanging 25 feet from a tree stand.

So, I, as well as the other team members, tested them in those environments. Some wore them while shed hunting and doing post-rut, offseason deer scouting in Tennessee and Mississippi. Others trudged through hollows and up steep bluff-lined hills while moving and pulling trail cams on favorite whitetail properties.

As a whole, the group of testers spanned across the springtime turkey woods of Montana, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee. We chased gobblers from sunup to sundown, both “run and gun” hunting and sitting in a blind. The team members in Montana hiked deep into the mountains on public land.

Some of us also used them outside of hunting. For example, Sonja Anderson wore her’s while working on a ranch. In my case, rubber boots are some of my favorite boat shoes, especially during the springtime. I waded into shin-high water while launching drift boats on trout streams and bass boats on giant lakes. They were worn through torrential downpours while I stood on casting decks for hours on end.

The Testing Process

The team for this test has collectively been wearing rubber hunting boots for multiple decades. My team and I took to the woods in the winter of 2024-25 with some of the latest rubber boots and used them through spring Turkey seasons. We did everything in them, from sitting in cold stands to hiking around while moving trail cameras in some of our favorite public land hidey-holes.

I submerged some of the tested boots up to the top in buckets, and Sonja Anderson did the same in water troughs to ensure they were completely waterproof. Both of us stayed in the water for extended periods of time to check for slow leaks that may go unnoticed during brief periods of submersion.

Sonja even used hers to chase steers around muddy corrals. If there’s a situation that you would use rubber boots in, I can just about guarantee that one of the crew members has tested these boots in that environment.

Buyers Guide: How to Choose the Best Rubber Hunting Boots

The best rubber hunting boots shouldn’t feel like you’re wearing a specialized boot. Often, rubber boots are noticeable while you’re wearing them. You have giant uppers that clap against your calves, sweaty feet, and most notably, feet that are blistered or sore from wearing something that is a massive deviation from your standard street shoe.

It doesn’t have to be like that, though. Here are some things to consider before purchasing to ensure you don’t end up in one of those situations:

Why Are You Looking for Rubber Hunting Boots?

This is the first thing you need to consider. People look for rubber hunting boots for two reasons: use in water and mud, or warmth.

If it’s solely a water and mud issue you’re trying to solve, then boots like the Chêne Floodline will serve you just fine. You won’t get any insulation, which is great for early seasons when temps are warm, but you still get protected from water

Are you looking for warmth? Many whitetail hunters live in rubber boots, which are superior to other boot styles in terms of heat. They have a big open toe box, which maximizes blood flow. Many options also come with differing levels of insulation designed to keep your feet warm. The best boots we found for warmth were the Korkers Neo Arctic, which are nice and toasty while sitting still, but aren’t the best for covering ground.

Most people find themselves somewhere in between, looking for an option that does both. They want a boot for springtime turkey hunts and a boot that doubles as insulation while in the treestand. If that’s you, read on.

Insulation

There are two different units for measuring insulation in rubber hunting boots: grams and millimeters.

Grams describes the weight of the boot’s insulating material. A 1,000-gram boot is much warmer than a 400-gram boot.

As a general rule, 1,000+ grams of insulation is best for stationary hunting in temperatures below freezing. This would be a great level of warmth for late-season, midwest whitetail hunters.

A rubber hunting boot that has 200-400 grams of insulation will run much cooler and is ideal for springtime turkey hunting. If you plan on being mobile during your hunt, a lower insulation level will help keep your feet from sweating.

If you’re trying to get the best of both worlds, a boot with 600-800 (similar to 5mm of neoprene)-gram insulation can pull double duty. The RedHead Camo Utility Rubber boots fit this bill great.

Millimeters are used when describing neoprene boots. The higher the number, the warmer the boot will be. A boot 9mm and thicker is similar to a boot with 1,000 grams of insulation, and a 3.5mm boot will be similar to a 200-400-gram boot.

Material

Rubber hunting boots are obviously rubber, but they’ll be insulated with either a synthetic thinsulate-type material or neoprene. Both have pros and cons.

Neoprene insulation is more economical than synthetic insulation. However, neoprene is not breathable, so it’s much easier to get sweaty, wet feet in it.

Synthetic insulation, like the PrimaLoft Gold insulation found in the SITKA Ventlite GTX boot, is warm, and SITKA lined the boot with GORE-TEX, making it breathable. Your feet can still get sweaty, but it’s much easier to keep sweat at bay. Unfortunately, those benefits are going to cost you, with that boot costing almost $400.

Fit

Fit is the biggest problem with rubber hunting boots. They don’t have laces or any real adjustability. You get what you get. Modern options like the KUIU HD Mud Boot solve the fit problem associated with rubber boots.

Often, people tell you to upsize when searching for your rubber boot. That’s because you’ll usually be wearing insulating socks underneath them, and a tight fit will cut off circulation to your feet, resulting in limited blood flow and cold toes. But some manufacturers already take this into account, and going up in size creates issues.

The problem is that going too big will result in your heel slipping and hot spots with awful blisters. Hunters aren’t wearing cute boots as a fashion statement to the coffee shop. They have to, you know, hike in them.

The best boots we found balance those two things without altering their sizing. They give you ample room where needed, but don’t fit so tightly that they’re uncomfortable or impossible to remove. You can hike in them without noticing that there’s a giant chunk of rubber strapped to your foot.

Many of the rubber hunting boots on the market do not come in half sizes. If you’re in between sizes, it is likely best to go up. However, don’t go up a full size.

If you hunt in cold conditions, any extra room you have will be better for thicker socks and better blood flow. If you go too small, you’ll have trouble getting your foot in or out of the boot and probably won’t have room to put on a warmer sock.

Price and Value

Rubber hunting boots may be a key part of your kit or something you only wear during a couple of rainy weeks in the spring. How often you plan on using them and the environment you plan on using them in should dictate how much money you fork over.

Budget

For those who don’t use rubber hunting boots much, a boot in the sub-$100 range will give you everything you need. You can get a set with insulation that is waterproof and will keep you trucking through the mud after spring gobblers.

With a budget option, you’ll be giving up any form of breathability, as almost all budget rubber boots are made with cheaper neoprene. I’ve also found that budget options don’t fit as well and can cause your feet to get pretty sore, although an aftermarket insole can make a cheap boot feel like some of the best.

Budget boots also won’t hold up over time as well as more expensive options, and you may find they’ll begin to leak water through seams when crossing creeks. The tread may also wear faster than the tread on more expensive boots.

Mid Tier

Boots in the $150-200 price range will get you significant improvements from budget options that most hunters would find worth the extra cost. In this range, you’ll be able to get boots with different levels and types of insulation. Many boots in this range will have some form of fleece lining.

Mid-tier boots also have helpful features to help take the boot off, which is notoriously difficult with rubber hunting boots. The Chene Floodline, for example, features a zipper, making it the easiest boot in the test to take off.

You’re going to get a much more comfortable boot that lasts for years of sustained use.

Premium

While some may scoff at paying $250+ for rubber boots, these premium options, like the SITKAVentlite GTX boot, will have features that make them some of the best rubber boots out there. They’ll have the warmest insulation, breathability, and ultra-comfort.

If you find yourself hunting in rubber boots more than anything, it’s well worth paying the higher price. Mountain hunters often pay upward of $500 for a solid boot, so if you do the bulk of your hunting in rubber boots, a premium option could still be viewed as a steal.

If you’re looking for a lightweight hunting arrow to achieve flat trajectories, the Easton 5.0 ($109 per fletched six-pack) is the best choice out there. Across all of the different spines, it has one of the lowest GPIs available.

While most hunters have stuck with the “heavier weight equals better penetration” line of thinking, many are bucking that trend and are shooting lighter arrows. The reason? A lighter arrow has a flatter trajectory, which means you have a higher margin of error when pin gapping or estimating distance. And, a well-placed light arrow is deadlier than a poorly placed heavy one.

There are a wide variety of ways to purchase these arrows, with both match-grade and non-match-grade versions, and fletched or bare shafts available. The match grade shafts come with HIT inserts, but the standard version does not. If you get the fletched version, the 5.0 comes out of the package sporting 2″ Blazer vanes on the standard arrows and 3″ AAE Hybrid Stealth helical fletched vanes on the match grade.

Altra Arrows made its debut in 2024. They’ve set out to create no-compromise arrows with unmatched precision, and its Centrum Premier .166 arrow reflects that.

This is a 32” in length micro-diameter 0.166” high modulus carbon arrow with a straightness of 0.001”. All arrow packages are weight-matched to be +/- 1 grain. Altra offers options of a fletched 6-pack or an un-fletched 12-pack. The fletched version comes with Q2i RAPT-X vanes.

The big cheese of the Altra Arrows is its No Spine Technology. Traditionally, all carbon arrows have a stiff side. This can arguably affect where to install a cock vane, cause the need for nock tuning, etc. With Altra Arrows, there is no stiff side, so the result is a lower barrier of entry to perfect arrow flight.

Something else to note is the ARCOS Insert/Outsert System. This comes standard with your .166 Premier arrows. It’s a three-piece system — there’s an insert with an O-ring collar and an outsert system that threads onto the insert. The unique part about this is the O-ring, which provides more concentricity between the outsert and insert. It also helps lock that insert in place better. And last but not least, it provides vibration damping.

We don’t have any hands-on experience with these arrows yet, but judging from the specs this company is laying out, as well as the word on the street, these should not be overlooked in your arrow purchasing process.

If we had to pick a second place for a “budget arrow” it would undoubtedly be the 6.5 Hunter Classic from Easton. It may be affordable, but it definitely isn’t cheap on performance.

The 6.5 Hunter Classic is a 6.5mm carbon arrow shaft made right here in the USA. It falls in the middle in terms of straightness between the Bowhunter (0.006”) and Match Grade (0.001”) versions coming in at 0.003”. Easton offers this arrow in five different spines — 250, 300, 340, 400, and 500.  

One of the unique features of this arrow is the fact that it’s made using what Easton calls their Acu-Carbon Uniform Spine process. This means that the carbon strands are woven instead of rolled. As a result, there is no need for spine alignment and users get more consistent accuracy downrange.

All 6.5 Hunter Classic arrows come with the Easton 6.5mm inserts. These are 4 times larger at the shoulder to help increase durability and add to FOC. With that, you’ll also get the Easton Microlite nocks. A nock that is shortened by design, reducing the real estate between arrow and bowstring. It’s also more lightweight, which will also aid in achieving higher FOC (if that’s your thing).

The Easton 6.5 Hunter Classic is a phenomenal choice for any bowhunter looking for a moderately priced arrow ready to hunt anything in North America.

Black Eagle created the X-Impact, which is constructed with 100% high-mod carbon, and it’s the lightest arrow shaft available from the brand. It wanted to create an arrow that allowed for more point weight up front and excelled at long-range, pinpoint accuracy.

This translates into a faster system that doesn’t give up knockdown power. Deer are fast, but the X-Impact is faster.

You’ll find spine options of 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, and 900. This is an unreal range to choose from front to back. The X-Impact has a straightness tolerance of 0.001″. Arrows come with Black Eagle anodized outserts as well as its Micro-Nock (8 grains).

There are many moments in bowhunting where you are reminded of how important gear is. Where it means the difference between success and an unfilled tag. I’ve experienced a long list of them and arrows are something that I require a high level of trust from.

Buying Guide: How to Choose a Hunting Arrow

The hunting arrows listed above are wide in variety. There’s a little something for everyone. One of the major differences between some of these arrows is the arrow weight. Arrow shafts are measured in GPI (grains per inch). And some arrows have a higher GPI than others. This leads me to one of the most highly debated topics in bowhunting.

Should you use a heavy arrow or a light arrow?

We’re gonna suss that out to provide the tools you need for picking the right arrow weight for you and your hunting style.

Heavy Hunting Arrows Equal Momentum

In recent years, there’s a push for using heavier arrows for hunting. When I say heavy, I’m referring to arrows that weigh in around 500+ grains. There is a great argument for using a heavier arrow.

Weight equals more momentum, which is basically the force an arrow will retain going through an animal. More momentum means more pass-throughs and fewer chances of arrow flight being altered too much from ribs, etc. This is not to be confused with kinetic energy, which is the amount of energy an arrow has on impact.

Heavier arrows are also more wind-resistant than lighter arrows. And along with that, they absorb more energy on the shot, which translates into a quieter system.

The Downside of Heavy Arrows

While there are no doubt benefits to using a heavier arrow, there are also some drawbacks. The first is that heavier arrows are just slower. This gives arrow flight a much steeper trajectory. So, there is much less room for error when it comes to judging yardage.

This could spell trouble when that elk is a few yards farther than what you thought. For the multi-pin sight users, that also means larger gaps between pins, which makes pin gapping (aiming between pins for odd yardages) much more finicky. The result is less precision accuracy when pin gapping.

Light Hunting Arrows Equal Speed

On the flip side of things, slimming down arrow weight is becoming shinier by the day. Less arrow weight means more arrow speed, which translates into a flatter trajectory. So, it isn’t as critical to be pinpoint accurate with yardage estimates.

In hunting situations, this can be the difference between notching a tag and following a fruitless blood trail. Along with that, you’ll also be able to stretch the tape on your sight much farther. Even if one doesn’t plan on shooting an animal at a great distance, practicing far shots hones shooting skills and makes shorter shots seem even shorter.

And when those shots land at odd yardages, therein lies another benefit, particularly for multi-pin sight users. Your pin gapping will be much tighter in the sight housing, which means precision will increase when doing something like aiming between the 30 and 40 pins for a 35-yard shot.

Cons of Lightweight Hunting Arrows

Less arrow weight does come at a cost, though. The first is giving up that momentum that we talked about. Lighter arrows don’t retain as much energy through an animal as heavier ones do. This could result in fewer pass-through shots and a higher likelihood that an arrow is thrown off course by, say, a bone.

And on that note, a lighter arrow also doesn’t buck the wind as well. This is a potentially problematic situation in windy hunting conditions.

Then there is the shot. The moment of truth. When that arrow releases, it won’t be nearly as quiet as a heavier setup.

Lastly, durability seems to drop off the lighter an arrow is. So, if you miss or hit a bone, the chances of your arrow still being intact is slim.

Middle of the Road: A Hunting Arrow That’s Just Right

While you hold the wheel in terms of what arrow weight you’ll end up shooting, our opinion is this. Shoot a quality midweight type of arrow in relation to your setup overall.

I say this because a heavy/light arrow for one person might be a real heavy/light arrow for another based on their draw weight, draw length, etc.

By doing so, you’ll avoid many of the cons that come from the extremes on each end. It’s a best-of-all-worlds solution. There is one more thing, though, that is the most important to keep in mind.

Arrow Flight Is Everything

To cut to the chase, good arrow flight is way more critical than trying to shoot a heavy arrow or a light arrow.

There’s nothing wrong with having somewhat of a goal arrow weight in mind, but in the end, you need to shoot the arrow that is flying the best out of your setup. If your goal is 500 grains, but a 450-grain arrow is shooting lights out for you, it’d probably be wise to eat the 50 grains and go for accuracy and consistency.

There has never been a set of waders manufactured that will not leak at some point in their life. It’s a simple fact that you have to accept when purchasing them. If you go into it expecting perfection, you’re only setting yourself up for heartbreak. The SITKA Delta Pro Zip GTX waders are looking to change that.

SITKA has been on the quest to make the perfect waders over the last few years. The brand’s website claims that the Delta wader was “the last wader you’ll ever own,” but that isn’t due to them being impenetrable. It refers to their excellent durability, backed by a fantastic repair program.

This spring, SITKA released an updated SITKA Delta Pro Zip GTX wader, the next step toward perfection. I guess the last ones weren’t the last set you’d own.

I was able to get my hands on them before the release and have some initial thoughts. This is in no way a comprehensive review, as I haven’t had the opportunity to hunt with them or use them extensively. I received them in May, and I live in Tennessee. There is no reason to wear waders.

Due to that, I’ll cover basic things like fit and features. I’ll provide a more in-depth review after spending a season in these waders.

In short: The SITKA Delta Pro Zip GTX waders fit well and provide excellent maneuverability. They’re packed with features that arguably make them one of the best duck hunting waders on the market. At first glance, they seem to be well-made. I’ll update this review after a full season of hunting in them to determine if they’re worth the $1,100 investment.

With duck season being closed, and Tennessee summer heat coming in, fit is one of the only things I could test. Fit is important, though, especially for people buying online, and ill-fitting waders are miserable to wear.

SITKA Delta Pro Boot Fit

When I tried on the waders, the first thing I noticed was how perfectly the boots fit. Rubber boots are difficult to nail down, with most being either too tight or way too loose. The SITKA Delta Pro Zip GTX waders balance this perfectly.

My foot feels secure and doesn’t shift too much in them. They feel most secure around the middle part of my foot, with plenty of room in the toe box for good blood flow. I highly doubt my foot would come out of the boot when submerged in muck.

Shoe sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so I always compare everything to Nike shoes because they provide a reference people are likely familiar with. I wear a size 11 Nike shoe. I have the Delta Pro Zips in a size 11, and I think they run true to Nike size.

SITKA Delta Pro Wader Fit

I wear both hunting waders and fishing waders (and sometimes intermix them), and I find the differences between them interesting, given that they basically have the same job. Although there is overlap between the two categories, notable differences exist. One of them is fit. I have found most fishing waders to have a more athletic fit than hunting waders.

One of the main reasons to have larger fitting hunting waders is the need to wear warm layers underneath them. The Delta Pros are a touch baggier than my Simms waders in the same size, but not as baggy as other hunting waders.

Again, the Delta Pros play the loose/tight balance perfectly. The upper feels athletic, and there isn’t excess material, and I can fit insulating jackets underneath them. Most of the excess material is found in the lower portion, although I wouldn’t describe it as excessive.

The extra room in the lower allows for adding layers and increased mobility. I pulled some yoga moves out in the kitchen wearing these waders and was never once restricted by them. I could stretch my legs and bend my knees with ease. While contorting in all sorts of ways, I was amazed by how the little bit of extra material allowed me to move however I needed.

Overall, these waders run true to size.

Features

At a whopping $1,100, the SITKA Delta Pro Zips are loaded with cool features. Here are some of my favorites.

Zipper

I’ve been wearing zippered waders for years, and I love them. If you haven’t worn a zippered wader yet, here are the pros: they are very easy to put on and take off, they make going to the bathroom easier, and if you get hot, you can unzip them to let your core breathe.

If you have concerns about a zipper being waterproof, don’t worry. I have worn zippered waders from four different manufacturers, and not a single one has leaked. I’m sure the zipper on these will hold up just as well.

Shoulder Straps on the SITKA Delta Pro Wader

The shoulder straps on these waders are unique, and they are built with purpose. You won’t find annoying buckles that will mess with shouldering your shotgun. The straps are thin, featuring small loops. You attach one of those loops to a metal clip on the upper of the wader.

It’s an ingenious system that keeps bulk at a minimum. They feel secure, but I’ll see if they stay clipped through the rigors of running boats, setting up spreads, and brushing in blinds this fall.

Insulated Boots

The most apparent change from the past model is the boots on this version of the Deltas. The old waders had Lacrosse boots on them, but these are made by SITKA.

Like most hunting waders, the boots are insulated. SITKA hasn’t said how insulated they are, but I can tell you they’re warm. I wore these in my house and with a thin sock on, my feet were noticeably hotter than other parts of my body within 5 minutes.

The boots also have a large kick tab for removal, which is an upgrade from the last model. Boot-footed waders are notoriously difficult to remove, including the past iteration from SITKA, but these are a breeze to take off. It’s a boot that fits well, but comes off easily.

GORE-TEX Material

SITKA made the Delta Pro Zip GTX waders with a four-layer GORE-TEX laminate. You know that pursuit of the perfect wader? The brand claims that this new Delta wader is 10% more puncture-resistant and 200% more abrasion-resistant.

I don’t really know what that means in a real-world sense. I’ll have to beat them up this season to know if it actually works. I’m always skeptical of percentage descriptions of anything in the gear world.

Knee Pads

There are knee pads on the Delta Pros, and they’re massive. It’s more of a shin guard/knee pad. I like the length, because yes, it makes kneeling more comfortable, but it also adds more layers of material in a very high-wear portion of the wader.

Cattails would have to go through the knee pad outer layer, the knee pad itself, and then the four-layer GORE-TEX to penetrate into the wader. Seems pretty indestructible.

But Where Are the Pockets?

I’m disappointed with the lack of pockets in these waders. There are external handwarmer pockets and external water-resistant zip-front pockets on the chest.

However, this wader has no internal pockets and no true waterproof pockets. I mean, they’re over $1,000. You’d think you’d get a small, detachable, waterproof internal pocket for your phone at a minimum.

We all have phones now, and SITKA should know “pics or it didn’t happen” is the mantra with Insta bro hunters. I know that most phones are now waterproof, and I’ve certainly tested that and found it to be true, but still.

More organization would be nice. In the fishing world, any wader over $700 should have an internal pocket.

Final Thoughts

Aside from that pocket complaint, it seems like the SITKA Delta Pro Zip GTX Waders might be some of the toughest out there.

They’re true to fit, well-made, and have features that most hunters will benefit from. I’m stoked to wear them this fall and see how they stack against the other waders I’ve worn. Maybe they will be the last set of waders I ever own.
